Chelsea Women academy graduate Emily Murphy leaves for Brighton
Brighton Women have completed the signing of Emily Murphy from Newcastle United, bringing the 23-year-old forward back into the Women’s Super League after a productive spell with the Magpies. The 22-year-old arrives with 37 appearances and nine goals from last season in WSL2, where Newcastle finished sixth. Brighton sit third in the FA WSL with 49 points from 22 games last season, four wins clear of fourth-place Arsenal and six behind leaders Manchester City.
What the Brighton boss says about Murphy
Dario Vidosic, Brighton’s first-team head coach, highlighted Murphy’s WSL experience and attacking quality. “Emily has shown she has both a good eye for goal and the ability to provide for her teammates,” he said. “She had a taste of WSL football with Chelsea before then, so she knows the standards we will be demanding from her.” Brighton finished fifth in the WSL last season with 44 goals scored and 20 conceded, a +24 goal difference.
Murphy started her career with Chelsea Women, progressing through the club’s academy before making her senior debut in 2019. She moved to Newcastle United in January 2025 and quickly became a key player, helping them secure sixth in WSL2. Despite representing England at youth level, she switched allegiance to the Republic of Ireland and has earned 18 senior caps so far.
Why Murphy’s move matters for Chelsea Women
Chelsea Women are rebuilding after finishing third in the FA WSL last season with a recent run of four wins and a draw. The Blues shipped just 20 goals all campaign while scoring 44, but Murphy’s departure removes an academy graduate who contributed in her early senior years. Her exit follows a string of Chelsea Women players leaving for first-team football elsewhere, including a title race now six points behind Manchester City.
The Blues still boast a strong squad led by manager Emma Hayes, who guided them to a fifth consecutive WSL title in 2024. With the new season not yet under way, Hayes will now focus on replacements for outgoing talent while integrating youngsters from the academy.
What comes next for Brighton and Chelsea Women
Brighton kick off their WSL campaign aiming to improve on last season’s fifth-place finish. Murphy joins a Brighton attack that scored 44 goals last season, and her arrival gives Vidosic another creative option alongside established names. Chelsea Women, meanwhile, will look to tighten their squad before the new campaign begins, with Hayes likely to target reinforcements in midfield and defence.
The Blues’ recent form - four wins and a draw to close last season - suggests they remain title contenders, but the gap to Manchester City means every point will count. Brighton’s fifth-place finish last season leaves them six points adrift of Chelsea’s third-place finish, setting up a potential mid-table battle unless Murphy and Brighton can spring a surprise.
